Over the past three months, Shane and Richelle at ‘The Ultra Life’ have traveled nearly 4,000kms along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. And yep, they did it all by bike, with the exception of a couple of bus trips here and there! After spending some time in Mexico, Shane’s still heading South with the ultimate goal being to reach Patagonia, while Richelle’s returned home to Australia to spend Christmas and New Year celebrations with her family. But for Shane, he hasn’t packed up the bike just yet. We can’t wait to see where this awesome adventure takes him next, but, in the meantime, check out these amazing snaps from Mexico and find out a little bit about what they’ve been up to!
If you’ve been keeping up with Shane and Richelle’s trip from Canada to Mexico along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, you’d know they’ve encountered some hurdles along the way. Flat tyres, storms, bears, rattlesnakes, dog attacks, hostel stabbings, strong headwinds, sleeping out the back of Walmart, tired legs, exhausted minds… and we’re sure that’s just the beginning. But like all of these crazy adventures we put ourselves through, it’s usually the good parts (and the good people!) we hold on to and store away in our memories. Well, at least that seems to be the case for Shane.
“I don’t really know where to start with this ride. It’s been everything and more than what I’d imagined”, he says.
“The last 12 weeks or so have been absolutely jaw droppingly beautiful. The quiet nights and days, the quirky towns, and the beautiful crazy mountains. This trail is a must do for anyone, whether you’re a road rider, mountain biker or just a weekend warrior. I am looking forward to leg three of the trip, but am really quite sad this part is done. I guess I hadn’t thought too much past this stretch and now it’s finished. Like all big plans, it takes some time to settle in”.
While Shane’s still travelling South, which at times involves 12 hour days on his bike, he’s taken the time to rest, along with Richelle before she headed home. And Mexico is the perfect place to do just that. From the kind and accommodating locals, picturesque secluded beaches, kayaking in the turquoise waters and even swimming with whale sharks, they’ve had a taste of the Mexico that, as Shane explains, we don’t always hear about in the Western world.
Shane says, “I would recommend everyone to come to Mexico. Experience the warmth and genuine hospitality of the people. The food is amazing, the beaches are to die for and it’s pretty quiet here. There is a distinct lack of tourists due to the bad wrap the media gives this place”.“There are most certainly places of danger that should be avoided, but you will soon be told well before you get near them. They are also a tiny fraction of this country. This place is so diverse – from mountains to desert to crystal clear turquoise beaches. Everyone has a smile and a polite Hola”.
We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with this awesome adventure. You can also follow The Ultra Life travels through their blog, Facebook and Instagram. We’ll keep our fingers and toes crossed Shane makes it to Patagonia!
