Here at ioMerino, we don’t mind how you enjoy the trails, just as long as you’re enjoying them. Whether you’re hiking, running, cycling or whatever else it is you like to do, we’re all for it, and make an awesome range of Merino wool layers that will perfectly compliment your trail adventures. So when Rogaining SA announced they were holding their first standalone cycling rogaine in country South Australia, we were quick to get involved and support them as an official sponsor. We didn’t just sponsor the event and send down a bunch of gear for everyone to checkout, we sent the Head Honcho David Michell himself with a bunch of prizes and giveaways. And he was more than happy to hand out advice on how to layer for all weather conditions when you’re out and about enjoying the trails. Held in Kapunda, a country town near the world famous Barossa Valley wine region here in South Australia, the recent ‘Velogaine’ was a huge success and saw more than 100 cyclists compete in the two and four hour events. According to the team at Rogaining SA, ‘Veolgaine’ is simply a combination of the term ‘Velo’, which is widely used for cycling and bikes, and ‘Rogaine’. For those of you who are unfamiliar with rogaining, it’s essentially a long distance navigational course involving both route planning and checkpoints using a variety of maps. The teams who visit the most checkpoints (and the more difficult the checkpoint, the higher your points) in the allocated time are the ones who take home the winning title at the end of the day.
Despite the fact there was 100+ people sharing them at any given time, the country trails in Kapunda were perfect for a navigational cycling event – they weren’t overly technical and took in some beautiful country sites, including lots of sheep! Probably some of the very same who help us make our awesome Merino wool layers. 😉
It was awesome to see so many people wearing their ioMerino out on the day too. While it was chilly in the morning, it warmed up as the day went on, so our naturally breathable and temperature regulating Merino layers were perfect before, during and after the event.
