It’s no secret I/O Crew member Sputnik loves to run a bit. (In his I/O Merino, of course!) In fact, over the past five years he’s clocked up quite a few marathons and ultra marathons including finishes at two 100km trail races on the Ultra Trail World Tour, (North Face 100 Australia and Tarawera 100 New Zealand), and a somewhat spectacular DNF (Did Not Finish) involving a helicopter rescue at a 200km race in Nepal.
He also takes running and adventure tour groups to Bali and Cambodia, so it’s fair to say he’s learned a few things along the way. Now he’s taken a heap of those lessons, along with some of the best pictures from his adventures, and put them in a book and called it ‘The Swashbucklers Guide to Running Away from Dinosaurs’. There is a reason for the somewhat unusual title, but you’ll have to read the book to find out what it is!
By his own admission, the book is hardly ‘War & Peace’. “It’s definitely a book for people who’d rather be running than reading” he says. “I wanted it to be fun and easy to read, rather than be in the running, pun intended, for the Pulitzer”.
The result is 180 pages of fun, color, advice and inspiration. And not just from Sputnik himself. He’s somehow managed to convince some of the world’s greatest runners to contribute so there really is something for everyone.
There’s pearls of wisdom from some truly amazing people including one of Time Magazine’s ‘Most Influential People in the World’, ultra marathon man Dean Karnazes, and one of National Geographic’s 2013 Adventurers of the Year, ultra runner Lizzy Hawker.
TrailRunner magazine in the USA even called it “One of our favourite books to have crossed our desks in the past year”.
Whether you’re just starting out, coming back from a break or injury, trying to take your running to the next level, or just want a bit of a ‘pep talk’ from some of the world’s greats, there’s something in here for runners of all levels and abilities.
