If you’re somebody who enjoys spending time in the backcountry, (or even prepping for a zombie apocalypse), then you’re probably going to want one of these. And even more so if you enjoy helping other people because there’s some awesome causes behind this one. The team at Vestergaard designed the LifeStraw® range of specially designed portable water purifiers with hikers, trekkers, climbers, (basically any explorer who’d benefit from a portable water filter), and underprivileged communities around the world in mind. Vestergaard are on a serious mission to combine business with ‘doing good’ and promise with every LifeStraw® purchase, one school child in a developing community will receive safe drinking water for an entire school year.
We’re so fortunate in Australia for many reasons (our dangerous wildlife is not one of those). Not only do we have the world’s best (and softest) Merino wool, we’re also lucky enough to have complete access to clean drinking water. According to Vestergaard, “Water is the most abundant compound on the earth’s surface, covering over 70% of the planet. However, only 3% of the water on earth is fresh water. Of this 3%, 68.7% is trapped in glaciers and 30% of fresh water is in the ground. Leaving only 1.3% of the earth’s fresh water supply accessible for humans to consume”.
So there’s a lot of people on the planet drinking contaminated, dirty water. 894 million people to be exact. Contaminated water is full of waterborne bacteria and diseases such as e-Coli, Salmonella, Giardia, Hepatitis E and Typhoid Fever. Vestergaard believe, “Having access to clean water for drinking and sanitation would prevent at least 9.1% of all global diseases and 6.3% of all deaths”. With this in mind, they began their personal mission to make a difference and introduced their range of portable water filters to the world.
LifeStraw® is an award-winning portable filter that turns water from any freshwater source (lakes, ponds, puddles etc) into safe, clean and drinkable water. The straw is light and durable, which is actually a lot like MicroMerino®, and removes 99.9% of waterborne diseases. So if you’re planning an adventure where water supplies are limited, or you’re not able to carry around numerous drink bottles, the ‘LifeStraw® Personal’ filter and ‘LifeStraw® Go’ drink bottle are super efficient alternatives. And will help ensure you stay hydrated on the go.
How does the filter work?
- Water enters and is forced through narrow fibers under high pressure.
- Hollow fibers trap bacteria, protozoa, and other contaminants which are flushed out by backwashing.
- Clean water exists through tiny pores in the walls of the hollow fiber.
Along with providing assistance during natural disasters since 2005, LifeStraw® products are helping many underprivileged communities in Africa. Through the ‘Follow the Liters’ initiative, Vestergaard promise to contribute part of the funds to distribute LifeStraw® Community water purifiers that are specially designed to deliver safe drinking water to schools and their children. Since October 2014, Vestergaard delivered 1,646 LifeStraw® Community purifiers to 301 schools in the West Kenyan region, reaching over 157,975 school children.
