Usually you’ll find ioMerino on hikers, runners, cyclists, MTB riders, snowboarders, skiers, climbers and other various other adventurers. So this test was something a little different for us, that’s for sure. Alison Heinrich has represented Australia at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup and understand the importance of high performance clothing. Here’s what she has to say about ioMerino – on and off the range.
I normally struggle with woolen clothing and a lot of thermal clothing in general. Things close to my skin tend to itch and be uncomfortable. But I found ioMerino is the best I’ve tried – I’ve had no trouble with the tops during hikes and general wear.
I love the short sleeve tops for really hot weather, they breathe so well and I don’t find they end up smelly at the end of the day like some polyester tops I own. They are thin enough for me to wear underneath other clothing without looking bulky – same goes for all the ioMerino items I own. They are stretchy enough I can push the sleeves up if I need to, and I love the extra long length and thumb loops on the Altitude tops – there’s nothing worse than a gap between gloves and sleeves when it’s cold. The seams are not bulky at all and there are no itchy tags, which is a plus! The neckline is not too high either, but still gives good coverage around the chest/back of the neck area from the sun for those like me who get burnt very easily.
I like that they aren’t too obviously ‘thermal looking’, I can get away with these for general wear also. The fit is really nice, they have a flattering shape.
When I’m training on the range I have to be ‘covered’ appropriately so if it’s hot I can’t really be wearing loose, sleeveless/low cut clothing as it’s a safety issue so the short sleeve shirts are perfect for training in the heat as they’re really breathable and cool. I always wear these on cold and early mornings at the range, and even just by themselves they are surprisingly warm considering how good they are on sunny days.
I wear these traveling, in airports, to and from the range, and while training and competing. They’re extremely versatile in that I can remove and add layers on top of them, without getting bulky and hot, and they are so comfy!
