While our friends in the Northern Hemisphere are starting to defrost and enjoy some fine summer weather, here in Australia winter has arrived and trail running season is on in earnest. Less deadly snakes, less crippling heat, more trail time! One of the most recent events was the first race of four in a new trail running series organized by Trail Running SA. We want to make sure everyone’s warm and comfortable out there so we’ve jumped on board as a sponsor and went along to race one at Sturt Gorge to cheer everyone on.
As a relatively small capital city, Adelaide in South Australia has some pretty awesome trails within easy reach. Sturt Gorge being one of them, less than 16kms from the city center, but with some amazing trails – especially in winter when the streams are flowing. So it made for the ideal setting for Race One in the series, with more than 300 runners tackling the 17km and 23km courses.
With some wet weather forecast, most runners were able to sneak across the finish line before the rain hit, but it was still a fresh morning making it perfect ioMerino wearing weather. We spotted a number of people out there in there io, including a couple of women runners sporting their limited edition ‘Mongrel’ tops, and ioCrew member Sputnik – who had only just returned from running the 50km race at Ultra Trail Australia – in his Keystone T.’
If you’re running (or walking) any trails over winter, be sure to check out our natural, lightweight layers here.
A few lucky runners walked away with ioMerino gift vouchers at the end, and ioTeam member and trail runner Sarah Murphy, (who was in recovery mode after running the 100km race at Ultra Australia the weekend before), came along to cheer everyone on and take the photos you see below.
